Who the hell are these people?

  • Chris Shelton. Jarl of Hiltenhelm

    Chris Shelton (He/Him)

    Jarl of Hiltenhelm (President/Owner)

    Master of Webs (Website Manager)

    Master of Ceremonies (Event Coordinator)

The Jarl serves the club as the head instructor, voice of the club, club visionary, and scape goat in case something goes wrong. Although he makes the decisions and has the power to dictate the direction and actions of the club, he is not without oversight. The small council composed of the club founders and a select few officers oversees the actions of the Jarl. If he behaves in a manner unbefitting the spirit in which the club was founded, he can be deposed by unanimous consent among the small council. In that event, a new Jarl will be selected from the existing officers.

The Master of Webs Maintains the website and the youtube channel.

The Master of Ceremonies coordinates the events the club either hosts or co-hosts.

He is also available as a personal trainer. Winner of 19 medals across 7 different weapon categories, if you're trying to get on the podium of your next tournament who better to learn from than the most decorated fighter in Pittsburgh.

  • Elizabeth Wildenhaim (She/Her)

    Elizabeth Wildenhaim (She/Her)

Hand of the Jarl (Vice President)

    Third Thane of Hiltenhelm

Since graduating from Knight School, Liz has stepped forward in many avenues of club leadership long before being made a club officer. She took it upon herself to draft the first beginners longsword curriculum, aided in finding us a temporary location when the Hamilton Avenue Location turned into a quagmire, and has been an essential volunteer. For her acts of service and aptitude in forethought she has been granted the honorary title of 3rd Thane of Hiltenhelm and has been promoted to the rank of Hand of the Jarl (Vice President).

She also can teach you longsword! Check out her personal training sessions if you're interested in learning the way of the sword but are too bashful to take lessons with everyone else.

  • Robin Steele

    Robin Steele (She/They)

Hand of the Jarl (Vice President)

Due to Robin’s sterling attendance record and desire to help the club, she was given the position of Master of Facilities. Robin’s duties include collecting dues from students at the start of class, ensuring new students have signed the waiver, helping new students get geared up, ensuring the gear returns to the storage area after class, and general club maintenance.

After taking on even more responsibility of helping to train other administrators, helping maintain membership info in our online portal, keeping the schedules updated, sourcing new weapons and gear, and being ... just super flexible in helping maintain the club it was a unanimous decision to promote her Hand of the Jarl (Vice President) to more accurately reflect all of the responsibility she'd been handling.

  • Shawn Howering (He/Him)

    Shawn Howering (He/Him)

Master of Coin (Treasurer / Business Manager)

The Master of Coin monitors the incoming revenue generated by the club, club expenditures, and ensures that any new prospective expenditures will not jeopardize the club’s ability to honor its debts and maintain its equipment.

  • Paul Wintruba

    Paul Wintruba (He/Him)

Master of Whispers (Photographer and Social Media expert)

    Master of Lessons (Full Instructor)

Paul had been taking classes with us for a while. At one point after class I overheard Julia asking if he could take some head shots of her. During the conversation it was revealed that he wasn’t just a photographer, he was the owner of Scrimshaw Media! After taking a quick look at his website we hatched a plan to replace all of the crappy iPhone 8 photos I’ve been polluting the website with and officially create a club Instagram! So as better looking photos start trickling onto the internet feel free to shoot a thank you to our friendly neighborhood master of whispers!

He also can teach you longsword, rapier, or saber! Check out his personal training sessions if you're interested in learning the way of the sword but are too bashful to take lessons with everyone else.

  • Aleksei Bulan. Master of Lessons

    Aleksei Bulan (He/They)

    Master of Lessons (Full Instructor)

    Master of Staff (Staff Manager)

Aleksei was actually my (Chris Shelton’s) original Saber and Sword and Buckler teacher! He has graciously agreed to help us by teaching one Saturday a month to give me the freedom to play hookie every once in a while. He also is our staff manager and helps to make sure our club improvement initiatives are getting worked on.

  • Eric McChesney (He/Him)

    Eric McChesney (He/Him)

    Master of Lessons (Full Instructor)

Back in college Eric was taught to fence incorrectly, possibly because his eccentric German teacher thought it was funny. But after some time with the wonderful instructors of Hilt and Helm, he has learned how to End Them Rightly and now passes that knowledge on to others as a Master of Lessons.

    He instructs saber on Tuesdays.

  • Tony Cavalline (He/Him)

    Tony Cavalline (He/Him)

    Master of Lessons (Full Instructor)

    Forth Thane of Hiltenhelm

Tony was the first person in the club to obtain a medal in an official tournament (managed to beat me by exactly one day). He was also instrumental in finding our current location. As honor and appreciation for his service to the club, he has been named the 4th Thane of Hiltenhelm!

Anthony will be instructing Longsword on Mondays.

  • Pete May. Master of Coals

    Pete May (He/Him)

    Master of Coals (Small Councilor)

    Earl of Levertine

    First Thane of Hiltenhelm

Pete was awarded his titles due to exemplary service to the club for his donations of back of the head protection, foam swords, and his home for FunFecht 2022 (our first sponsored event). The timing and immensity of his actions have had an indelible mark on our organization. As thanks, he has been granted a seat on the small council which oversees the direction of the club leadership.

  • Kevin Brough (He/Him)

    Kevin Brough (He/Him)

    Scribe of Lessons (Administrator)

Don't worry, that guy at the podium asking for your personal information and credit card is with the club. Kevin helps the instructor by helping you get signed up for class, taking your money, and helping you figure out what gear you need while the instructor is busy running class. Your personal info is safe with him ... although if you see someone who looks similar to him but is wearing sunglasses and a fake mustache you may want to ask someone else. That's probably his evil twin brother who is most certainly there to steal your information.

  • Ryan Leonard (He/Him)

    Ryan Leonard (He/Him)

    Scribe of Lessons (Administrator)

Ryan picked up a sword about 2 years ago and hasn’t looked back. He is there to help you get signed up for class, take payment, and help you figure out what gear you need while the instructor is busy running class. He is enthusiastic about sharing his passion for HEMA with others and is always game to lend a hand (or shin, or other valid target)

Chris Shelton - Jarl of Hiltenhelm

Chris Looking Cool as Hell!

Jarl Chris Shelton of Hiltenhelm looking cool as hell with (what scientists would call) a dope ass katana!

Chris Shelton has been doing Historical European Martial Arts (HEMA) since 2014. He has “mastered” (if that’s what you want to call it) German Longsword, Saber, Rapier, Sword and Buckler. Recipient of 8 medals and numerous awards including 2018 Clash of Claymores Hema Fashionista, he infuses the teachings of several sword masters including Johannes Liechtenauer, Fiore dei Liberi, and Joachim Meyer with his own eccentric flair to produce a sword fighting style that is most certainly “one of a kind”.

What People Are Saying

Fencing is very cathartic! You can’t think about your personal problems when someone is trying to stab you in the face

— Arnold S. A guy Chris stabbed in the face.

I won’t pass my sword SAT’s any time soon. Or get into a good sword college. Or get a good sword job with a sword 401k and sword benefits… but I’m having loads of fun!

— Kenny G.

Watch out for his hand strikes. The guy is like a textile mill from the 1920’s.

— Justin C.

Everything he does is just wrong! My mentors have warned me for years about doing the most of the things he does. And yet somehow when he does them they always seem to work against me.

— Victoria G.
